GentleWave® Ultracleaning Procedure Medina
Cleaning the highly complex anatomy of the root canal system can present a real challenge in root canal therapy. Our practice is meeting this challenge like never before with the state-of-the-art endodontic technology of the GentleWave® Procedure.

The GentleWave Procedure is an innovative alternative to standard root canal treatment that uses a powerful combination of procedure fluids and energy to clean the deepest, most complex portions1,2 of the root canal system—including the microscopic spaces1,2 that standard root canal treatments can miss.3 The GentleWave Procedure is so effective at cleaning the root canal system,1,2 there’s less chance of failure over time.4
With the GentleWave Procedure, we can typically clean and fill the tooth in just one session,3 helping reduce what is typically a multiple-visit procedure to just one. The minimally invasive1 protocol also helps preserve more of the natural tooth,4 helping keep the tooth’s structure strong. This less-invasive approach helps to promote fast healing,4 so you can quickly return to your normal routine.
Our practice takes pride in offering our patients the most innovative and effective treatment options. If you need root canal therapy, contact our office today to learn more about the GentleWave Procedure.

A Better Root Canal
Many people wince at the thought of having root canal therapy. But now, we are excited to share with you a new option for root canal treatment. With GentleWave® Ultracleaning Procedure patented technology, we can now give our patients a root canal procedure that is quicker, more reliable, and more comfortable than ever before.
Less Chance of Reinfection
Because the root systems of teeth are so complex, it can be difficult to reach all areas with a traditional root canal, which utilizes a series of files to remove bacteria and diseased material. By contrast, the GentleWave® Ultracleaning Procedure uses multisonic energy and specialized fluids to reach every corner and crevice of the tooth for a more complete cleaning and less chance of reinfection.
How does the GentleWave® Ultracleaning Procedure work?
The GentleWave® Ultracleaning Procedure combines acoustic energy and optimized fluids to reach every part of the root system, including the interior porous surfaces, which can’t be thoroughly cleaned with endodontic files. With traditional root canal treatment, biofilm often remains, and can lead to a reinfection of the roots within weeks. However, with the GentleWave® Ultracleaning Procedure, all of the biofilm is removed in a single session so there is little risk of a second infection.
Benefits of GentleWave® Ultracleaning Procedure
- Comfortable: Because it is less invasive than files, it is also much more comfortable.
- One-Treatment Procedure: The process is so effective; it is usually done in just one visit. (Traditional root canal therapy often requires two visits.)
- Healthier Teeth: The process leaves more of your healthy tooth intact.
- A Cleaner Clean: The combination of fluids and ultrasonic waves ensures a deeper cleaning in areas where bacteria can hide from endodontic files.
What is Multisonic Ultracleaning™?
Traditional ultrasound wavelength technology relies on a single wavelength. With Multisonic Ultracleaning™, however, multiple frequencies are used at the same time and combined with special fluids to deliver the deepest clean.

Innovative Root Canal Technology May Help Protect Patients from COVID-19
With the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, you may worry about going into the endodontist’s office for a root canal procedure. Besides being nervous about having a “root canal” done, you might be concerned about leaving your home, or fear the potential for viral exposure from other patients, endodontists, or their staff.
Even prior to the pandemic, dentists had a good track record on infection control. We have used many safeguards to protect our patients, such as rubber dams that limit aerosol emission during treatment and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Healthcare agencies such as the American Association of Endodontists, American Dental Association and the Centers for Disease Control have called for additional measures in light of the virus, which our practice has adopted, such as extra PPE, more frequent cleaning of treatment rooms, new air filtration and social distancing.
One of the technologies our practice has integrated is the GentleWave procedure for cleaning and disinfection of root canals, which offers several benefits during this time of COVID-19:
- The GentleWave procedure is generally performed in our office in one visit,1 minimizing the inconvenience of a two-visit procedure, and thereby reducing a patient’s potential exposure to COVID-19.
- The GentleWave Procedure helps preserve more of the tooth structure2,5, giving patients the opportunity to save their natural tooth3
- There is virtually no aerosol released during the GentleWave procedure. 4According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), some endodontic instruments create a visible spray that can contain particle droplets of water, saliva, blood, microorganisms, and other debris. Because the GentleWave system is a “closed-loop” system, this means it is designed to release virtually no aerosolized material into the air.
- Instruments used during the GentleWave procedure are pre-sterilized and used only on an individual patient, eliminating any potential for cross-contamination between patients.
“GentleWave is the latest advance in root canals. It provides efficient cleaning and disinfection of the smallest spaces in the teeth, which allows us to deliver an optimal root canal experience for a patient,” said Nivine Y. El-Refai, BDS, DDS, MSD. “During this time while patients may be concerned about COVID-19, it also minimizes both their time in our office and aerosol emissions, and therefore, the potential for viral exposure.”
The minimally-invasive GentleWave procedure uses acoustic energy to activate cleaning solutions deep into the microscopic anatomy of the tooth, effectively removing tissue and debris that cause infection.2,5 Many patients – especially those who have undergone standard root canal treatments in the past – describe the GentleWave experience as comfortable and report minimal to no post-procedure pain.3
